the name
Last in the Door is my favourite thing in a name: it’s whatever you take from it and/or bring to it. Are we the last ones through before the rest are locked out, or the ones left to “turn the lights off on your way out”? And of course, since we’re here to talk cut-ups and collisions, Janus and his doorways sort of invite themselves in.
I am A. R. Thomas, a Yorkshire boy living in Athens, Greece. Come here for poems, cut-ups, collages, and a general exploration of what meaning we can find in the liminal and oblique spaces between ideas.
the practice
Alongside my regular poems, I use the cut-up technique made famous by Brion Gysin, William S. Burroughs and David Bowie: a disassembly of texts into pieces, rearranged to find new ideas as well as reinterpretations of the originals.
The cut-up app on this site sits alongside the scissors. It is a digital way of disintegrating digital texts, inspired by various occult texts to add an interesting texture to the output, but mostly for fun. It’s free and local (nothing is sent outside your browser), so you can try it out if you’re looking for some new inspiration for your own projects.
colophon
An attempt at following IndieWeb POSSE ideas. Built on Astro, trying to be local and small.
The type is IBM Plex Mono and Georgia; the wordmark handwritten and cut up.
rights and reuse
Everything here is my own work unless cited. Where I’ve cut up or collaged someone else’s words, the source is credited, and those fragments stay their author’s. They aren’t mine to give away.
That’s why there’s no blanket Creative Commons licence on the site: I can’t grant rights I don’t hold. The spirit is open even where the licence isn’t. If you want to quote, translate, reuse or cut up anything of mine, just ask. I’ll almost certainly say yes.
